5/31/2023 0 Comments Weird west minisAll in all a delightful experience that I wouldn't have minded to get more of, but even as a short fragment is was a lot of fun. Of note is also the intriguing title sequence - hans never disappoints in this regard. ) The engaging storytelling was complemented nicely by a great choice of high quality art, and music that (at my reading speed) fit almost perfectly to the scene length, smoothly supporting the dramatic mood and its turns. The main story was also followed by a short trailer for a fictional wild west exploitation movie, which made the whole mini-mod reminiscent of Tarantino's and Rodriguez' Grindhouse cinema project, but I'd wager it's also heavily influenced by all the wild west (pulp?) novels that according to the book recommendation thread hans has been reading lately. :)Īs for the module itself, it was more of a teaser, only took me 10-15 minutes to play through and the gameplay solely consisted of reading and fighting one easy combat, but I found the story to be very gripping, and I am now itching to see more of the characters and the setting, even though I suspect it's artistically meant as a fragment, not a promise of things to come, and intentionally left without conclusion, or rather with an open ending, as nothing more (or less) than an outsider's glimpse into a strange world of Weird West mystery. It's just a small thing (though admittedly a pretty cool sound), but I wanted to note that the thanks were received and appreciated. Then Gunfighters Ball will put you right in the heart of the 1870s American West. Back in the days, he really appreciated hans' work as well, and even though he has no connection to UA anymore, I told him about this, and he laughed and - I think - felt honored by it. 14.99 22.99 Ever wanted to be Doc Holiday, Wyatt Earp, or maybe you have a darker side and wanted to live on the edge as a gunslinger. As a personal side-note, while reading the accompanying text file, I was immediately humbled and surprised by seeing an acknowlegement to myself (undeserved in this case) and my good friend Sven Krüger, for the Wild West gunshot sound he converted for use with UA more than a decade ago. For Christmas this year, I treated myself to the newest mini-mod by one of my favorite UA authors, and also one of the most dedicated and prolific.

5/31/2023 0 Comments Spectre movieIn Spectre, though, Mendes and writers John Logan, Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and Jez Butterworth seem determined to convey the sense of some continuity coming to a climax, of things being wrapped up retrospectively. Characters have recurred, but each episode essentially started as a tabula rasa, just as each sequence within each film seemed to have no real relation to the ones that preceded it: the films are structured like musicals, a succession of novelty numbers, with the big production number usually at the end (but sometimes, as here, right at the start). In the past, Bond films simply succeeded each other, leaving no trace from episode to the next. So the whole business of Spectre being built on the principle of looking back seems to me essentially pointless. What’s his motivation? Tenacity, moral certainty, and the merest soupçon of Martini-dry wit. But frankly, who cares? Bond doesn’t need much character nuance. Spectre similarly gives Bond a troubled past-troubled pasts, and the Unresolved Issues that accompany them, being mandatory these days, whether for The Doctor, Harry Potter, or the Marvel pantheon of heroes. Some Bond films have tried to give 007 an inner self: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and Casino Royale, where he suffers the pangs of lost love, and Skyfall, centered on his Oedipal relation to authority, as embodied by Judi Dench’s M. But the actors always cohere within strict limits to a template: a white British male (although rumors persist that he won’t always be white), taciturn but prone to the odd wisecrack, unstoppably athletic but unflappable, self-contained enough to go through hell without ever breaking a sweat, and always ready to slip back into a fresh tux (can you imagine Bond smeared with grit in a singlet, like Bruce Willis in Die Hard?). Daniel Craig may be very different from Sean Connery, who was very different from Roger Moore or Pierce Brosnan or Timothy Dalton (although the problem with George Lazenby was that he was too similar to the Connery prototype, in a pale carbon-copy way, to be remotely interesting). But unlike the Doctor, whose age, appearance, and manner fluctuate wildly, he also stays essentially the same. The Doctor, an extraterrestrial, can actually transform his body, with each mutation also radically and unpredictably changing his personality-which has proved an ingenious way to keep the series going despite 12 different actors playing the lead.īond, as we know, also regenerates: that is, he can be recast. Each also has the capacity to regenerate. As heroes, Bond and the time-traveling Doctor have one obvious thing in common: they each represent a last line of defense, a final bastion of strength, faith and ingenuity, each one alone capable of (repeatedly) saving the world. No (62), and the start of the BBC TV series Doctor Who (63). There’s only a year between the first Bond film, Dr. But it’s a certain kind of indestructibility that makes him, and the series, interesting. Of course Bond is indestructible, that’s the point. The narrative proper-after an extended action prelude, and Daniel Kleinman’s title sequence, big on octopi and symmetry-begins with Bond’s boss, the peppery new M (Ralph Fiennes), warning him that the British government is thinking of wrapping up the licensed-to-kill “00” category of operatives. The closing credits end, as ever, by telling us that Bond will be back, but the film constantly raises the possibility that perhaps he won’t-or at least, not as Daniel Craig, who has been fairly cantankerous when asked about the prospect of playing the part again. What’s most interesting about this episode of the series is the way that it’s concerned, very unusually, to offer some sort of closure or finality. You won’t be disappointed-well, not too disappointed. Still, Sam Mendes has once again brought a lavish feast of effects to the table, and applied them with seriousness and grace, as well as the mandatory brio. Let me say that I half share my colleagues’ enthusiasm for Spectre-personally, I had my own unexpected burst of belated 007 enthusiasm with Skyfall, arguably the most elegant, sophisticated Bond film ever. Yes, nostalgia has a lot to do with the appeal of Spectre-it’s no accident that its heroine, played by Léa Seydoux, has the brazenly Proustian name Madeleine Swann. You can also tell by the hyperventilating enthusiasm of British critics in general, many of them males of a certain age-by which I mean that the modified Aston Martin that 007 drives in this film will remind them unfailingly of the Sixties Corgi toy Bond cars that my generation eagerly collected. You can tell by the British box-office figures for his latest outing Spectre: £41.3 million ($63.15 million), since its release on October 26. 5/31/2023 0 Comments Htda the space in between lyricsI'm not sure what the future holds for this project, but I'm always excited to see and hear new ways that people try to convey sadness, darkness and the weight of mortality. HTDA is going the populous, non-corporate label route which really shows us that this is a labor of love and an exhibition of creativity and choice. Feel free and head over to their site for some free music and a fairly sweet music video. But, of course, you don't have to take my word for it. It's a truly alluring, meditative song that represents the only time on the EP when Maandig's delicate vocals don't feel secondary to the rhythm they feel crucial. The track "A Drowning" definitely represents the best that this formation has to offer. The band hits their stride with tracks like the suicidally relaxing "The Space in Between" and the sassy "BBB." There are moments when HDA seem like they might have a few mainstream hits swirling around in their well, but I don't think that's the direction of this project and I think they exist better as experiencable art. Lyrics for Space in Between by John Concepcion feat. The first track to be released off this free-to-download 6-song EP (click!) was "The Believers," which is by no means their strongest offering. Maandig is by no means a powerhouse on the mic, but her voice evokes a sort of Hope Sandoval/Jennifer Charles jazz-house malaise that fits in perfectly with the background blip-olympics. This six song eponymous EP isn't going to blow you away, but it does strangely, and satisfactorily, feel like the "next step" that I've been looking for as a follow up to the discord of The Fragile, without feeling like a "step down." Yes, this is something all together new that takes the challenging framework of a Reznor tune and adds a bit of soft, morose poetry to it. Maandig's whispering voice is reminiscent of Reznor's at his softest and most discreet, and this new pairing of her understated, often breathy vocals with his new found love of moody, Pro Tools dry-heaving makes for a wonderfully hypnotic contrast. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Unique wallpapers hdYou'll still have to sort through some of them, but there are plenty of normal wallpaper images on the site worth checking out. During the COVID pandemic, extrinsic PEEP has been utilised in ARDS to improve oxygenation, lower oxygen demand (FiO2), and minimise atelectotrauma (repeated opening and closing of alveoli), all of which helped to prevent ventilator-induced lung damage (Alhazzani et al. Limiting lung damage to plateau pressures (Pplat) of less than 30 cm H2O is another lung-protective strategy, since Pplat > 32 has been associated with higher short-term mortality (Yasuda et al. Low Vt (4–8 ml/kg) is suggested by numerous standards, including the COVID-19 guidelines from the last surviving sepsis campaign, since it is considered to decrease volutrauma in ARDS patients' lungs (Alhazzani et al. Using a low tidal volume (Vt) and a high positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) in patients with ARDS has been shown in several trials to minimise hospital mortality (Walkey et al. It has its own set of hazards and consequences, including pulmonary barotrauma (PBT) and ventilator-induced lung injury, both of which have been related to multisystem organ failure in ARDS patients (Slutsky and Ranieri 2013 Nov 28). Patients with ARDS and COVID can benefit from positive pressure ventilation (PPV), which is a non-physiological and invasive/non-invasive approach that can save their lives. In mechanically ventilated patients, the relationship between acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and subsequent pneumothorax has long been recognised as a risk factor for fatality (Huang et al. Recent studies have found that barotrauma-related issues caused by invasive mechanical ventilation are becoming increasingly prevalent, with up to 15% of COVID-19 patients experiencing them (Bajema et al. WHO Director-General’s remarks at the media briefing 2020 Chan et al. In COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), pneumothorax is reported to occur at a rate of 2% (World Health Organization 2. This highly transmissible and contagious disease affects a variety of systems, including the respiratory tract. WHO Director-General’s remarks at the media briefing 2020). As a result, the death rate in this patient group is higher.ĬOVID-19, a novel coronavirus, has spread around the world (World Health Organization 2. Patients infected with COVID-19 have a high risk of barotrauma when on mechanical ventilation. There were no statistically significant differences in CRP, procalcitonin, d-dimer test, LDH, or ferritin. In patients with and without barotrauma, significant factors were white blood cell count ( p = 0.001), neutrophil percentage ( p = 0.012), and lymphocyte percentage ( p = 0.014). Of those that developed barotrauma, 45 (93.7%) patients were in acute respiratory distress syndrome. Out of 48 patients who developed barotrauma, 30 (62.5%) presented with pneumothorax, 22 (45.8%) with pneumomediastinum, 10 (20.8%) with subcutaneous emphysema, and 2 (4.1%) with pneumopericardium. This study aimed to explore the possibility of developing the barotrauma-related issues with mechanical ventilation in the cases of individuals suffering from COVID-19. This finding may be explained by developmental changes in physiology, pharmacology, and behavior, and may have been influenced by a paradoxical drug effect or multiple drug antagonism. The development of barotrauma in COVID-19 patients who were ventilated and admitted to the intensive treatment unit seemed to have been a problematic issue in the COVID era. The median daily drug usage in group B (2.3 mg/kg/day) was twice that in either group A (younger) or group C (older) (both p less than 0.001). The daily sum of MDP dosages was calculated for each of the 326 study days, a mean of 9 study days for each case. The 36 cases selected were divided according to age into three groups (less than 4 months = A, 4-18 months = B, greater than 18 months = C). Cases where the dosage of MDP would be influenced by neurological, hemodynamic, or painful diagnoses were excluded. We sought to determine whether our use of MDP varied with patient age. Mechanically ventilated children usually require a combination of sedation (morphine = M, diazepam = D) and paralysis (pancuronium = P) to minimize anxiety, discomfort, and the risks of self-extubation, tracheal injury, and pulmonary barotrauma. Here Comes the Boom received mixed to negative reviews from critics. Filming continued on through May 25, 2011, in Lowell and Quincy, Massachusetts, where it wrapped shortly there after, by early June 2011. Productionįilming began on March 28, 2011, in and around the Boston, Massachusetts, area. In the closing scene, Niko and all of the students in Scott's citizenship class attend their American citizenship ceremony. Once Malia sings Scott's theme song at the UFC fight, shown on TV, her father tearfully accepts that music is her true passion. Eric becomes the chef for her father's restaurant, which improves the business, so Malia's father is thankful to Scott. Scott encourages Malia to pursue her musical talent, which drives hostility from her father to Scott for "telling his daughter to disobey him". Malia's father wants her to stop music and focus less on school so that she can help with the restaurant, but she has a passion for music. Malia's father has a restaurant that is failing since his chef quit. Eric has a large family and both he and his wife have low paying jobs Eric enjoys cooking. Scott and Bella kiss through the chain link fence of the ring.Ī subplot involves student Malia, her father, and Scott's brother Eric, who is unhappily self-employed as a house painter. After finding inspiration from the students, Scott manages to win the fight, earning $50,000 and Dietrich's respect. Scott has no answer to his dangerous opponent, Ken Dietrich, who is angered that his original opponent cancelled and that he is stuck with a man that "does not deserve" to be fighting at the UFC. During the fight, Marty reminds the losing Scott that even if he does not win, he has inspired the students, which is their real purpose as teachers. The publicity of Scott's slow rise to fame has grown, and the school's band appears in the stands to play his theme song, thanks to Bella contacting Rogan. Scott decides he must win the fight and the $50,000 purse. Once he arrives, he learns that school administrator Elkins has been embezzling from the winnings and the school, meaning all Scott's efforts have been in vain. Scott and Niko accept the offer, with Scott and his crew soon travelling to the MGM Grand Las Vegas for the fight. Scott confronts Niko, who apologizes and admits he turned it down because he was jealous – Niko was once asked to fight at the UFC but suffered a neck injury while training for it, ending his career. Scott is within $6,000 of his goal, when Mark tells him that Niko turned down a sanctioned UFC fight offered by Joe Rogan, with the certainty of earning $10,000 for a loss. He begins to engage the class and earns the respect of his students. Scott has been pursuing the school nurse, Bella Flores, and they share moments revealing affection for each other, while also rekindling Scott's passion for teaching. Scott then begins fighting in small MMA fights and gradually gaining higher amounts of money for the school. While Mark trains with Scott, Malia De La Cruz, one of Scott's students and a band member, helps Niko study for his citizenship test by putting the information into songs. Niko begins training him in defense, later adding trainer Mark to teach offense, after Scott knocks out an opponent and realizes that wins give larger payouts, needing fewer fights to achieve his $48,000 goal. Scott, helped by Niko and Marty, begins with small unsanctioned bouts paying only $750 to the loser. While watching the UFC at Niko's apartment, Scott learns that the loser of a fight receives $10,000, which gives him the idea of raising the money by fighting and losing in MMA. When Scott arrives at Niko's apartment, he learns that Niko was a former mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter. He moonlights as a night instructor for an adult citizenship class, where student Niko asks him for outside tutoring. Concerned for both his colleague and his students, Scott attempts to raise the $48,000 necessary to keep the music program alive. Budget cutbacks at the school jeopardize the continuation of its music program, which would result in its teacher, Marty Streb, being laid off.
